Winter Sunset

Winter Sunset - Oil on 8" x 10" Panel - I was painting at my easel and the sun was setting. I stopped what I was painting and decided to try and catch the colors of the winter sunset. I then added the one tree that the suns rays were hitting.

Karmic Sandals - Pastel on 13" x 10" Canson Paper - These sandals were drawn in Florida sitting on the edge of a wall overlooking the ocean. When I had finished I looked to my left and a large, two foot reptile was watching me. I slowly turned toward him and did some quick sketches of him before he fled into the bushes. I later heard that they can bite .... just lucky I guess!

White Beauty - Oil on 11" x 9" Linen Panel - This is a still life that was painted up at the cabin in Grand Rapids, MN. Deb Kirkeeide and I were safe and warm in the cabin painting while outside it was -20 degrees with a wind chill that put the temperature to a -50. My poor car was outside and did not start in the morning. But that experience is a whole other story.

February Freeze - Oil on 12" x 6" Panel - I was just up at the cabin the last weekend and the weather was way below zero with a wind chill at a -50 below... Burrrrr!!!! I went back to the place where I painted the painting "January Thaw" and found every thing frozen over. You would think it would be the other way around, a little warmer in February. This painting was painted from a photo. I didn't have enough anti-freeze to keep my paints fluid!

I'm trying to work with my transparent darks, let the canvas show through and still be somewhat intuitive in my work. Show the energy of the still life, show the brush strokes, keep working the edges!!!! This could all drive an artist to go crazy! But, lets keep the ears, the head just looks better with a pair of them.

We are having a very late and cold spring so the trees are just starting to come out making the trees have a grey cast to them. I also tried a transparent gold ochre wash to tie the painting together.
